Ninety Two Fireballs from twelve countries competed in heat one of the 1998 Fireball World Championships. In a sunny day the wind was 10 to 15 knots from the South South East and the temperature was 25C.

A brisk Fifteen to Eighteen knots South Westerly greeted the fleet of Fireballs at Frankston Y.C in Australia for Heat 3.

Current World Champion DJ Edwards/Adam Bowers (Great Britain) led the fleet to the first mark, followed closely by 1996 World Champions Colin Goodman/Jim Turner (Great Britain) and Geoff Davey/Ric Milner (Australia). Goodman/Turner opted for the spinnaker early for the first downwind leg and managed to be in front by the leeward mark, followed by Edwards/Bowers and Heather Macfarlane/Andrew Perry (Australia) with a jury rigged jib sheeting cleat. These three fought out a tough battle with Goodman/Turner taking the gun ahead of Macfarlane/Perry and Edwards/Bowers. Series leader Ian Pinnel/Jon Ward (Great Britain) finished sixth.
